ARE HALLMARK MOVIES, REALLY CHRISTMAS MOVIES?
That's a really good question to ask! Recently on my blog "
One Year Bible Club" I've been solicited plenty by Google adds with the Hallmark Socks. The Ad shows a pair of feet wearing socks with the feet sticking out towards you and you can read on the bottom of the socks, "If you can read this, leave me alone, I'm watching Hallmark Movies". Nobody has more of a slew of Christmas Movies than Hallmark. But are they really Christmas Movies? If you watch any number of them, as the Movie illustrated in the picture above [case & point!] you will find that Hallmark Christmas Movies are really nothing more than Love Stories, featured, around the Christmas season. The theme is nowhere near any theme of Christ, salvation or Jesus birth. It's simply a Love Story, or some like to call them "chick flicks" or "romantic comedies" and if you're not single and falling in love this Christmas Season, then they are down right depressing. For sake of argument you say, "but the Hallmark Movies are based off of Love and God is Love; therefore they are "Christmas Movies" after all. While we cannot argue the point that God is Love and that Hallmark movies are themed around love, the question that needs to asked, is "which love" are we talking about? "Love is Love", you say. No it is not! There are 3 major kinds of Love, Philia - love of Friendship, Eros Love - Intimate/sexual Love and last, there is
The Love of God, Agape - Unconditional Love. If we want to argue the point that Hallmark movies are based off of Love and God is Love, the argument fails here! The Love that Hallmark Movies relish on is Eros Love. From which we get the word Erotica. To compare a movie based off of Erotic-Eros Love, to being a movie on the Love of God - Agape (for which Jesus was born into the world to die for the sins of man) that is a far, far stretch. Not only are Hallmark movies not Christmas Movies, the Love they focus on is Ero's. You don't have to be a Christian to display Eros Love. You could be completely devoid of Faith in Christ and display plenty of Eros Love. Is Christmas really about falling in love and displaying Eros Love? Hallmark seems to think so, as they have capitalized off the Christmas Season, as many other consumers have, to exploit it to their financial gain by simply packaging one love story after another, displaying often no faith or mention of Jesus, and marketing it to the public as "Christmas Movies". I would say that "The Grinch that stole Christmas" has more spiritual depth, than your average Hallmark, Love story, ughhh....I mean Christmas Movie.
